Day 2: Consider Your Ways

Socrates, a philosopher from 399 BC, said that “the unexamined life is not worth living”.

I had the opportunity to go to the Agora in Athens, Greece and see the spot where Socrates taught young men and where he was sentenced to death for “poisoning their minds with new ideas”. Though his ideas got him killed, Socrates changed the trajectory of our world forever. I believe that he was able to be so impactful because he frequently looked at his life and evaluated the good and the bad in it. He considered his ways.

Read Haggai 1:5-7

As Christians we are called to consider our ways. We are told to examine and reflect on the good things in our lives and reflect on the sin we are indulging in. The tricky thing is that some sin is written in the Bible in black and white, while other sin can be as simple as a personal conviction that we alone have to listen to. This is why we are called to examine our own lives instead of examining the lives and the sins of others. The verses in Habakkuk tell us to consider how much we labor, and how much fruit is being produced from those works.

Questions to consider:
When was the last time you examined your life? Are you running yourself down and not seeing any progress? Are the people around you changing because of the way you live or the sacrifices you are making?

Prayer
Jesus, I pray that I would be a person who provides time and space for you to speak to my heart. I pray that I would listen to the convictions you whisper to me and that I would have the courage to live out my life differently as a result.
